Joyce’s Special Return to Madrid

We’ve got some exciting news to share here at Guided Spain Tours. We’re starting a new blog series called “Spain Tour Stories”. The aim is simple. We’ll share stories from real private tours we’ve led across Spain, so you can see what a trip is actually like once you’re here.

Rather than polished sample itineraries, these are genuine travel experiences, filled with memorable moments, local encounters, and the occasional unexpected twist that comes with exploring Spain.

We’re starting with Joyce, who enjoyed an 8-day private tour, based in Madrid.

About Joyce

Joyce’s trip to Spain was a little different from most. Having lived and studied in Madrid in the 1970s, she wasn’t just coming to see the sights. She was returning to a city she had once called home and revisiting places she hadn’t seen in decades.

Traveling with Guided Spain Tours, Joyce enjoyed a tailor-made itinerary based in Madrid, with private day trips, flexible guides, carefully selected hotels, and daily support along the way. Here’s Joyce’s full 8-day itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Madrid – Airport Transfer –  Free Evening in Madrid

Day 2: Collection – Tour of Segovia – Lunch at Mesón de Cándido – Return to Madrid

Madrid – Bringing Back the 70s

Madrid was the heart of Joyce’s trip. Although she was able to take day trips around Spain, she was based in Madrid for 7 nights, which made sense given her personal connection to the Spanish capital. This meant she could visit lots of exciting destinations but also revisit meaningful areas of the city and experience Madrid with fresh eyes.

Staying in a centrally located hotel, Joyce had the freedom to enjoy the city while also having private services arranged for the days when she wanted a deeper, guided experience.

Joyce enjoyed a private guided tour with Leticia through the Paseo del Prado and Retiro area, now known as Madrid’s Landscape of Light. This part of Madrid is one of the city’s most elegant cultural corridors. Joyce hadn’t forgotten her Spanish as she told the team,

“Estamos con Leticia! Todo está fantástico!”

That little mix of Spanish and English said it all. Joyce wasn’t just sightseeing. She was enjoying being back in a place that had once been part of her everyday life.

Segovia: A Five-Star Guide and a Beautiful Day Trip

One of the early highlights of the journey was Segovia. After her visit, Joyce shared a lovely message with the team:

“Guide Lola in Segovia was fabulous. Highly recommend. 5 Stars.”

Segovia is one of the most rewarding day trips from Madrid, known for its Roman aqueduct, historic old town, fairytale-like Alcázar, and traditional Castilian atmosphere. But as Joyce’s message shows, a great guide can make all the difference.

Toledo and Consuegra: Cheese, Wine, and Scenery

Another full-day experience took Joyce from Madrid to Toledo and Consuegra.

The day began with a private driver pick-up in Madrid and a guided visit to Toledo, one of Spain’s most atmospheric historic cities. Toledo is known as the City of Three Cultures, shaped over centuries by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities.

After Toledo, Joyce enjoyed an experience at the Manchego Cheese Museum, including a guided tasting. The tasting included local flavors such as Manchego cheese, almonds, ham, and several wines. Joyce later joked that “day drinking” was difficult! If that’s the biggest problem you have on vacation, then we think you are doing pretty well!

From there, the plan continued toward Consuegra, famous for its hilltop windmills and La Mancha landscapes. Joyce and her travel companion had already seen windmills in other countries and decided they did not need to focus heavily on that part of the visit. Instead, they enjoyed the scenery before returning to Madrid.

A Free Day With Family

The beauty of a private tour is that the itinerary is totally up to you. You can choose to pack in as many attractions as possible, or you can also choose to give yourself a bit more free time to enjoy the region leisurely.

Joyce kept a free day in Madrid, which gave her space to enjoy personal plans. She mentioned having an appointment with her cousin and a special dinner arranged, so our tour planners ensured to keep this time free for her to make her own arrangements.

Planning a Private Spain Trip with Personal Meaning

On the final morning, Joyce had a private transfer arranged from her hotel to Madrid Airport to conclude her tour.

Upon returning home, she shared a lovely review of her time.

“We will never travel to Europe any other way. Emily, Marta, and the staff made the tours and day trips seamless, with no stress, no concerns. The hotel they picked for us was perfect, everything tailored to our requests. We are planning to have them design next year’s adventure too. Communication was excellent, the private guides all flexible and knowledgeable. Excellent service and planning.”

We love when our guests have an extra-special reason to visit Spain, so it truly meant a lot to us to help Joyce return to the Madrid that she once knew so well. To know that she really enjoyed her time just makes it all the more meaningful!
